IJNIA Journal

International Journal of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (IJNIA)

Welcome to the International Journal of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (IJNIA), an open-access, international, peer-reviewed platform (ISSN 3156-4356 - Online) dedicated to advancing scholarship, innovation, and professional discourse across architecture and the built environment. IJNIA was formerly published as the Nigerian Institute of Architects Journal and has been in publication since 1980. As the built environment faces increasingly complex challenges associated with rapid urbanisation, climate change, technological transformation, infrastructure deficits, and the growing demand for sustainable and resilient communities, the journal provides a platform for innovative research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and stronger integration between architectural practice, academic scholarship, and global knowledge systems.

The International Journal of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (IJNIA) is an international peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing knowledge across architecture, the built environment, and related disciplines. Guided by the theme "Bridging Practice, Research, and Global Architectural Thought," the journal provides a platform for the dissemination of high-quality research, professional insights, and emerging ideas that contribute to shaping sustainable, inclusive, and future-oriented built environments.

IJNIA promotes dialogue among academics, architects, researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and global stakeholders to address critical issues affecting cities, buildings, infrastructure, and communities at local, regional, and international scales. The journal encourages contributions that integrate theory, practice, innovation, and policy to generate impactful solutions for contemporary built environment challenges.

The journal welcomes original research articles, review papers, technical and professional practice papers, case studies, conceptual papers, and interdisciplinary research covering areas including architecture, sustainable design, digital construction, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Digital Twins, City Information Modelling (CIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the built environment, smart cities, urban informatics, housing, heritage conservation, construction technology, resilience, and environmental sustainability.

Special emphasis is placed on emerging digital and intelligent technologies transforming the built environment, including data-driven urban systems, semantic modelling, simulation technologies, smart infrastructure, cyber-physical systems, and integrated digital platforms that support sustainable planning, design, construction, operation, and lifecycle management of buildings and cities.

Through fostering critical discourse, technological innovation, and globally informed architectural scholarship, IJNIA aims to become a leading platform for advancing architectural thought, professional excellence, and sustainable development within Nigeria, Africa, and the wider international community.

Resilient Urbanism: Reimagining Cities for a Sustainable Future

The inaugural issue of the International Journal of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (IJNIA) presents five original research articles addressing contemporary challenges in architecture, sustainable development, urban planning, and smart cities across Africa. The papers examine high-performance sustainable buildings in West Africa, the role of Science and Innovation Parks in resilient urbanism, urban aesthetic assessment in Abuja, professional readiness for smart infrastructure implementation in Enugu State, and architectural strategies for mitigating air pollution in rapidly urbanising cities. Collectively, this issue demonstrates IJNIA's commitment to publishing impactful research that advances resilient, sustainable, and technology-driven built environments while informing architectural practice, policy, and urban development.
