Science and Innovation Parks as Spatial Catalysts for Resilient Urbanism in Nigeria: A Framework for Sustainable Urban Development

Nigeria’s urbanisation has consistently attracted global attention due to persistent infrastructure deficits, inefficient land use, environmental degradation, and climate-related risks. In response, resilient urbanism has emerged as a key strategy for enhancing the capacity of cities to absorb, adapt to, and transform in response to environmental change. Science and Innovation Parks (SIPs) are increasingly recognised globally not only as drivers of technological advancement and economic growth but also as spatial mechanisms for promoting sustainable and resilient urban development. However, their potential contribution to resilient urbanism in Nigeria remains underexplored. This study therefore examines the role of SIPs as spatial catalysts for resilient urban development through a qualitative comparative case study analysis of selected SIPs in the United States, China, and the United Kingdom. Using a systematic literature review, qualitative analysis, and spatial evaluation, the study identifies key spatial planning principles that support urban resilience, including integrated land-use planning, mixed-use development, transit-oriented development, green infrastructure, smart infrastructure, and collaborative governance. Based on these findings, the study proposes the Resilient Science and Innovation Park Spatial Framework (RSIP-SF) for integrating SIPs into Nigeria’s urban development strategies. The proposed framework demonstrates how internationally established planning approaches can be adapted to support inclusive, adaptive, and sustainable cities in Nigeria.
